Richard III is just full of surprises. We have found Richard to be a bit of a clown in his own dark comedy.

YOUNG SHAKESPEARE
RICHARD III
By William ShakespearE
Directed by Cynthia Florez & Ann CiccolellA
June 20-30, 2024
Mark your calendar for the amazing Tragedy of Richard III: containing, his treacherous plots against his brother Clarence; the pitiful murder of his innocent nephews; his tyrannical usurpation; with the whole course of his detested life, and most deserved death. This production adds a dash of irony and humor.
Our 11 teen performers are on a courageous and dynamic journey through the final act of The War of the Roses — confronting war, greed, ambition, seduction and duplicity. We are relishing Shakespeare's unique vision that is both horrifying, yet funny and entertaining. We hope the audience discovers, as we have, that Shakespeare speaks to us today!
- Cynthia Flores, Young Shakespeare Co-Director
A month-long rehearsal period culminates in a student-performed, professionally-staged production at The Curtain Theatre, Austin's own Elizabethan replica theater space. The program is now in its 16th year. Students receive in-depth training in acting, movement, diction and stage combat before presenting 8 public performances.
Richard III features Young Shakespeare alumni Gabriel Cruz, Sabrina Kim, Steely Schmid, Jago Mystiek, Lara Alcantara, Erin Zuniga, Teagan Boyd and Roman White. New to the program are Camryn Matula, Kenji Miller, David Mackowski.
The play is directed by Cynthia Florez and Ann Ciccolella. Costumes are by Cecelia Gay; sets and lighting by Patrick W. Anthony; sound by Kellie Baldwin; and choreography by Isabella Burke.
“Each summer we are amazed by the young talent that develops in this professional setting. Teens transform together through six weeks of training in Shakespeare text analysis, voice and diction, movement.”
